Indonesian Migrant Worker, Caregiver for Elderly, Wins Taiwanese Cultural Video Competition
Taipei, Oct. 27 (CNA) A migrant nurse from Majalengka, West Java, was selected as one of the winners of a Taiwanese cultural video competition. Ratna Juwita Sari (39), who works in Taipei City's Shilin district, also actively volunteers to assist the Taipei City Government as a guide during New Year's celebrations on the Xiangshan MRT.
Ratna Juwita Sari, better known as Rara, expressed her joy at this achievement. She told CNA that she participated in the competition held by the Taipei Language Institute (TLI) after completing a Mandarin language class specifically for migrant workers in Taipei.
"I took the Mandarin class held by TLI. It happened to be a face-to-face class on Sundays, and I took several sessions. At the end of the class, there was a competition to share Taiwanese culture in the Dadaocheng area, Cisheng Temple, and the surrounding area. So I wore a qibao shirt and took photos and made a video explaining things in Mandarin," Rara explained.
The approximately five-minute video was eventually submitted to the Taipei migrant worker committee for a competition, Rara explained. Unexpectedly, the cultural video, submitted to the Migrant Worker Video Exhibition with the theme "I have a story in Taiwan," ultimately won the Outstanding Choice award.
On Sunday (October 26th), Rara received the award from representatives from the Taipei City Office of Migrant Workers and Persons with Disabilities at the Heritage and Culture Education Center of Taipei in Dadaocheng.
Rara told CNA that she never imagined her hobby of strutting in front of the camera would turn out to be such a boon and even lead to such an achievement.
Rara also explained that in addition to her work as a caregiver for the elderly, she also uses her Sundays off to attend free Mandarin courses offered by the Taipei City Government.
She also explained that on New Year's Eve, Rara often volunteers as a guide for the New Year's Eve crowds at the Xiangshan MRT station. She has been a volunteer with the Taipei City Government for four consecutive years.
At the end of the interview, Rara advised her fellow Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) members to use their time off for positive activities.
