Industry warns, Global scramble for migrant workers, it’s hard to find people with salary increases

The problem of labor shortage is serious, and the situation of missing migrant workers has led to a vicious cycle of labor shortage. Taichung City Councilor Lin Deyu pointed out that there are 85,000 missing migrant workers in the country, and more than half of them are in the manufacturing industry, leaving traditional industry business owners full. Affected by this, there were even reports of migrant workers disappearing after getting off the plane. He called on the Labor Bureau to face up to the plight of industrial operations. The Taichung City Labor Bureau pointed out that in the past, the waiting period for new hires after missing migrant workers was six months, which was shortened to three months last year.

Lin Deyu pointed out that according to the statistics of missing migrant workers released by the Immigration Office of the Ministry of Interior in March this year, there are more than 85,000 missing migrant workers nationwide, of which 48,000 are in the manufacturing industry, with Dali and Wufeng Districts in Taichung City For small and medium-sized or traditional manufacturing enterprises, there have been frequent incidents of migrant workers escaping in recent years. He questioned whether it was the poor management of the industry that led to the migrant workers escaping? Or have these migrant workers already deliberately escaped? We call on the Labor Bureau to be more responsive to the voices of industry.

Lin Deyu said that some employers have reported that they applied for migrant workers to come to Taiwan, but when the agency went to the airport to pick them up, they found that the migrant workers they applied for had escaped as soon as they arrived at the airport, and they could not be picked up at all; there were also migrant workers hired by factories who were there. They took temporary leave on Monday and Tuesday, but as a result, they began to miss work on Wednesday and lost contact with them. Some even just told the agency, "I won't do it anymore, so don't contact me anymore."

Lin Deyu emphasized that many companies are run with integrity. These employers hire foreign workers in accordance with the law. When migrant workers are missing, they are all victims. He calls on the Labor Bureau not to just unilaterally hold employers accountable for improper management, but to face up to the industrial plight. Assist with problem solving.

Director of Labor Lin Shuyuan said that according to the Ministry of Labor's investigation, some migrant workers may not be adaptable to the working environment or have poor working conditions, and some choose to escape because their residence period is about to expire. The Ministry of Labor has no responsibility for Employers have made adjustments. Last year, they relaxed the waiting period for newly hired migrant workers from six months to three months.
