TAIWAN GOVERNMENT WILL OPEN OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDONESIAN MIGRANT HOSPITALITY WORKERS

The Taiwanese government is considering opening up opportunities for migrant workers in the accommodation/hospitality industry sector, responding to strong pressure from industry players regarding the worrying labor shortage. The Ministry of Manpower emphasized that the priority remains the fulfillment of employment opportunities in the country. According to Deputy Minister of Manpower, Chen Ming-ren, the government will continue to strive to increase employment opportunities for indigenous citizens, including the elderly group and women who want to return to work.

Business actors in the hotel industry, led by the Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transport, have repeatedly requested that the doors be opened to migrant workers. They highlighted the vacancy of around 8,000 positions in the accommodation industry in the country, especially in the areas of cleaning and room service. In response to these demands, it was reported that the Cabinet had approved this plan, with the hope that this policy would be implemented in November. However, there are still a number of concerns that need to be addressed, including the effectiveness of matching workers with available jobs and adequate pay rates. The Ministry of Manpower has received a report from the Tourism Bureau regarding an open evaluation of opportunities for migrant workers in the accommodation industry. They plan to ask for input from experts and academics before holding a meeting to discuss further. Until now, there is no definite schedule for this meeting, but it is hoped that a meeting of experts and academics can be held before mid-December. All parties involved agree that the first step is to ensure domestic jobs are met, while still carefully considering the implications of opening up opportunities for migrant workers in this sector.
