GOVERNMENT WILL REVIEW PMI'S PLACEMENT
The government has decided to immediately review improvements to the management of the placement of Indonesian migrant workers (PMI) which have been regulated in Law Number 18 of 2017. This decision was conveyed by the Head of State in a limited meeting with a number of Advanced Indonesian Cabinet Ministers at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday , August 2, 2023.
"Earlier we discussed improving the management of the placement of Indonesian migrant workers. "And we actually already have Law Number 18 of 2017, we will try to review Law 18/2017 to see how the placement is," said Minister of Manpower Ida Fauziyah in his statement to media crew after attending the meeting.
President Jokowi has also instructed his staff to immediately make improvements regarding the management of the placement of PMIs, starting from the time of departure, work, until returning to Indonesia. The President hopes that improving the management of this placement can increase protection for PMI in an even better direction.
"Mr President asked the Coordinating Minister for the Economy to give him a two-week opportunity to review placement management. "Then asked the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs for law enforcement," said Ida.
Apart from that, Ida together with the Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian will also carry out an evaluation regarding the placement of the PMI. Ida said that the evaluation would involve regional governments in accordance with the authority stated in Law Number 18 of 2017.
"We hope that each region will carry out its obligations as regulated in Law 18/2017. "So the Minister of Home Affairs and I have agreed to hold a kind of coordination meeting involving the regional government," said Ida.
